Anthurium papillilaminum × luxurians

Cultivated origin of Anthurium papillilaminum × luxurians

The parent combination exists in cultivation only. Anthurium papillilaminum is a terrestrial wet-forest species from Panama. A. luxurians grows on the floor of very wet forest in Colombia and develops conspicuously bullate leaves.

Care for Anthurium papillilaminum × luxurians

• Cleaning the quilted leaves: Clean only firm mature leaves, using a soft brush or a gentle rinse. Let water run out of the recessed vein valleys and blot away remaining droplets.
• Pot stability: Use a stable pot that fits the roots. If the widening crown begins to unbalance it, place that pot inside a heavier outer pot for support.
• Light and leaf space: Keep the plant in bright indirect light and leave enough clear space for each soft new leaf to expand without touching nearby objects.
• Temperature and humidity: Maintain roughly 18–27 °C during normal growth. Move it from cold spots before temperatures stay under 15 °C. Humidity of about 60–80% suits it when the air also moves gently.
• Watering: Water once the upper layer has dried while slight moisture remains deeper in the pot. Soak the potting mix evenly, then let all excess water escape.
• Potting mix and drainage: Use a coarse, airy potting mix in a pot with complete drainage so the roots receive both moisture and air.
• Repotting: Increase the pot width slightly once roots or new growth from the base begin crowding one another.
• Feeding: Use a modest feed while the hybrid is producing fresh leaves and roots. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Propagation: Propagate from a rooted basal shoot or from healthy stem material carrying an active growing point.

Changes to watch for on Anthurium papillilaminum × A. luxurians

• Mineral residue in the recessed veins: Pale deposits that collect along the vein valleys are usually minerals left as water dries. Give the firm mature leaf a gentle low-mineral rinse, drain the valleys and blot away the remaining droplets.
• A flat or dented area on a hardening leaf: A local patch can harden misshapen after the soft expanding blade presses against an object. Clear a wider path before the next leaf opens so it can expand without contact.
• The pot shifts as the crown widens: An outward-growing crown can make the plant top-heavy even when the root ball still fits its pot. Keep the roots in that correctly sized pot and stabilise it inside a heavier outer pot.

Anthurium papillilaminum × luxurians is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Anthurium papillilaminum and Anthurium luxurians, and what do the names mean?

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Papillilaminum combines Latin papilla, “small protuberance”, and lamina, “blade”, referring to the finely bumpy leaf surface. The epithet luxurians is Latin for luxuriant or abundant.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Thomas Bernard Croat first described Anthurium papillilaminum in 1986 in Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 14, page 152.

Thomas Bernard Croat and Richard N. Cirino first described Anthurium luxurians in 2005 in Aroideana, volume 28, page 56.
