High-light houseplants for bright windows and grow lights

High-light plants need a position near strong daylight or under a sufficiently powerful grow light. The group includes sun-adapted succulents, flowering plants, variegated foliage and vigorous climbers, but they do not all need direct sun.

Filtered brightness or unfiltered sun

Many tropical foliage plants prefer bright indirect light. Cacti, Citrus and numerous succulents may use several hours of full sun after gradual acclimatisation. Species identity and previous growing conditions determine which range is appropriate. Leaf thickness and growth form offer only broad clues and should not replace species-level light guidance.

Suitable light can support shorter spacing, stronger colour or flowering, depending on the plant. It may also increase water use and growth rate. Plan for the mature footprint and any climbing support rather than relying only on the pot size at purchase.

Bleached patches and crisp scars indicate injury, whereas some species form protective pigments. The sunburn versus sun-stress guide explains the distinction.
