Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Gold Stripes’

Origin of Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Gold Stripes’

‘Gold Stripes’ is a cultivated selection of Tradescantia sillamontana, a species native to Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico. It grows as a succulent herb in exposed, rocky subtropical terrain.

Strong sun, low humidity, seasonal rain and large temperature changes favour compact water-storing growth.

Caring for Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Gold Stripes’

Light. Give very bright light and introduce direct sun gradually. The dense hairs and succulent leaves suit exposed, seasonally dry conditions; low light produces weak stems with long gaps between leaves.

Temperature and humidity. Keep it around 15–24 °C and protect it from prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Average household humidity, around 40–50%, is suitable.

Watering. Water thoroughly, then let the mix dry well before watering again. Keep the hairy leaves dry and reduce watering substantially during cool, slow growth. Keep persistent moisture away from the crown to reduce the risk of rot.

Potting mix. Use a coarse, fast-draining succulent mix with grit in a pot with a drainage hole. Keep the pot close to the size of the root ball to limit excess wet mix.

Feeding. Feed sparingly. Overfeeding produces soft growth and reduces the plant’s compact, woolly form.

Pruning. During active growth, shorten sprawling stems to keep the plant dense. Root healthy tips when the plant needs renewing.

Repotting. Use a slightly larger pot when roots crowd the container. Replace compacted mix that no longer drains freely; this alone does not require a larger pot.

Propagation. Propagate from healthy stem cuttings with one or more nodes. Root them in lightly moist propagation mix or water.

Problems that may occur with Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Gold Stripes’

• Soft stems beneath dense hairs: Moisture is lingering too long. Use a clean tool to remove only soft, rotten stem tissue, leaving firm healthy sections that can be rerooted if necessary. Replace dense mix with a gritty, fast-draining one and avoid leaving water in the woolly crown.
• Long gaps between leaves: Increase light gradually and prune stretched stems. New compact growth will form only under stronger exposure.
• Scorched pale stripes: Variegated tissue can burn after an abrupt move into full sun. Acclimatise in stages even though the species is sun adapted.
• Mealybugs hidden among the white hairs: Inspect nodes closely for cottony insects. Remove visible insects and keep the plant apart while checking for more. If a product is needed, choose one labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamentals, observe its dose and repeat interval, and avoid soaking the hairy leaves when they will dry slowly.
• White leaf hairs turn brown: Keep water off the foliage, improve airflow and remove decaying material. Hairs that remain wet trap moisture against the leaf surface.

Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Gold Stripes’ can irritate skin and the mouth

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs that may chew it.
• Its sap and leaves can irritate sensitive skin, the mouth and the digestive tract.
• Exposure may cause red or itchy skin, mouth irritation, drooling or an upset stomach. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

Who first published Tradescantia sillamontana, and what does the name mean?

Tradescantia commemorates the father and son John Tradescant. Sillamontana refers to Cerro de la Silla near Monterrey, within the species’ native region.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Tradescantia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 288; Heinrich Bernard Ruppius had proposed the name.

Eizi Matuda first described Tradescantia sillamontana in 1955 in Boletín de la Sociedad Botánica de México, volume 18, page 1.
