Terrarium Soil Mix

Sybotanica markets its current Terrarium Mix as a ready-made, moisture-retentive medium for planted tropical glass and paludariums. These are product-use characteristics, not a claim about an unpublished ingredient formula.

• Product purpose: Ready-made planting medium for tropical and subtropical terrariums and paludariums.
• Root contact: Suitable for compact tropical plants that grow in an evenly moist planting layer.
• Moisture management: Use enough substrate for roots and keep any excess water below the rooting zone.
• Enclosed containers: Check condensation and airflow before adding water; remove decaying leaves promptly.
• Plant choice: Not intended as a default substrate for arid succulent terrariums. For reptile or amphibian enclosures, check the animal species’ requirements separately.

• Create a reservoir layer: add clay balls or lava rock at the bottom of the glass container to hold excess water below the planting layer.
• Add a barrier: separate the reservoir and soil with breathable mesh to keep fine particles out of the lower layer.
• Spread the Terrarium Mix: add at least 5 cm of substrate so roots can anchor and microfauna can move.
• Introduce microfauna: add springtails and isopods where appropriate so they can break down small organic residues.
• Plant suitable species: choose ferns, mosses, small orchids and creeping tropical plants that appreciate stable humidity.
• Water and monitor: moisten carefully at setup, then adjust watering based on condensation, substrate feel and plant response.
• Long-term care: spot-clean fallen leaves and improve ventilation if the setup stays too wet.

• Planting zone: Designed for humid terrariums with small tropical roots and appropriate clean-up organisms.
• Moisture: The medium should be damp without standing water reaching the roots.
• Container conditions: In closed glass, evaporation is low; assess water levels and ventilation before watering again.
• Structure: Organic ingredients gradually change with use; refresh when the mix becomes compact, unstable or sour.
• Species selection: Choose plants suited to enclosed humidity. Reptiles, amphibians and other animals require species-specific husbandry assessment.
• Practical check: Check the water level below the planting layer and adjust ventilation before adding more water.
