Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ (‘White Princess Aurea Tricolor’)

Identity and naming history of Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ (‘White Princess Aurea Tricolor’)

This horticultural Philodendron selection circulates under the trade names ‘Fresh Aurea’ and ‘White Princess Aurea Tricolor’. Both names are used in cultivation for plants with the characteristic green, gold, lime, cream and pale markings.

How to grow Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’

Support. Add a pole, stake or trellis as the juvenile stem lengthens, then guide and secure the new growth with gentle ties.

Light and leaf colour. Place this Philodendron in bright, diffused light and increase the light gradually to a brighter position. Harsh exposure can scorch pale tissue first. Good light supports healthy growth, and each new leaf develops its own colour balance.

Temperature: For ‘White Princess Aurea Tricolor’, maintain about 18–29 °C and prevent extended chilling below 15 °C.

Warmth and feeding. Keep the plant warm and protected from cold draughts. While new growth is developing, apply houseplant fertiliser at a light rate; feed less once growth pauses.

Humidity. Keep humidity moderate and steady, with gentle airflow around new growth.

When to water. Feel below the surface of the potting mix and lift the pot to judge its weight. Water once the upper layer feels dry, has lost its cool dampness and the pot feels noticeably lighter. A damp upper layer or a heavy pot signals more drying time. When the watering cue is clear, soak the potting mix thoroughly, let all excess drain and empty collected water. Lower light usually extends the drying time.

Potting mix and drainage. Use an airy, organic potting mix in a freely draining container. This combination provides moisture and air around the roots and allows the root ball to drain promptly after watering.

Repotting. Choose a slightly larger container only after the roots become crowded. If the plant or support becomes unstable first, secure the support or stabilise the existing pot without automatically increasing its size.

Pruning and propagation. Retain ample green tissue on the plant and on any stem material with at least one node selected for propagation. Each cutting begins its own sequence of leaf patterns.

Troubleshooting Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’

• Natural leaf colour variation: Leaf patterns arise naturally, with gold, lime, mint, cream, white and occasional pink varying from leaf to leaf. Assess the colour across several healthy, firm leaves. Maintain bright, diffused light and steady support as new leaves open.
• Pale areas brown or leaves wilt in a dry pot: Damage that follows a move to brighter or hotter conditions most strongly suggests sun or heat; a dry root zone or excess salts can leave similar marks. Move the plant away from the intense exposure, acclimatise it gradually to a brighter position and check moisture through the medium. Flush the medium when salt build-up is plausible and drainage is working freely. A dry root ball is the likely cause, and a water-repellent centre can keep an ordinary watering from reaching every root. Rehydrate the medium thoroughly, confirm that its centre is wet and let all excess drain away. Check the pot sooner during the next drying cycle. Persistent wilt in moist medium calls for a root inspection and a pause in watering during the check.
• Fine speckling, webbing or feeding marks: Fine stippling or webbing can indicate mites, cottony material suggests mealybugs, attached bumps can be scale, and silvered feeding marks with dark specks can point to thrips. Visible insects add useful confirmation. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Choose a suitable product labelled for that pest, apply it to exposed areas and sheltered feeding sites, and patch-test it on a small pale section before treating the whole plant. Follow the label for any repeat treatment.
• Yellowing with wet, heavy substrate: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce oxygen around the roots and may lead to root rot. Pause watering, empty standing water and clear the drainage path. Inspect the roots when decline persists, retaining firm roots and removing dead, soft tissue. Repot into an airy, freely draining mix when the existing medium is compacted or collapsed, then align watering with the available light.
• Advancing wet or haloed leaf spots: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray or physical contact can also produce fixed marks. Isolate an advancing case, keep the foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue with a clean cut. Select firm, healthy material for propagation, and obtain a diagnosis before using a disease-specific chemical.

Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ (‘White Princess Aurea Tricolor’) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Philodendron mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
