Philodendron ‘Congo Green’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Congo Green’

Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ is a cultivated green Congo-type selection. The names Congo Green, Green Congo and Congo are used inconsistently in horticulture, and the exact relationship of current stock to the patented cultivar ‘Congo’ remains uncertain.

Keeping Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ healthy

• Crown care: Leave lateral space for the leaves, clear debris from the crown, and wipe and inspect the foliage periodically.
• Light: Give the plant medium to bright filtered light and rotate the pot periodically for even growth.
• Water: Allow part of the mix to dry, then water thoroughly and let all excess drain.
• Potting mix: Use an airy mix that holds some moisture with reliable drainage.
• Temperature and humidity: Maintain roughly 18–29 °C and move the plant warmer before temperatures remain below 15 °C. Maintain roughly 50–60% humidity through active growth. Pair this with light air movement around the leaves.
• Feeding: During new foliage production, give complete houseplant fertiliser sparingly. Once the growth flush is over, lower the feeding rate.
• Repotting: Move to a slightly larger pot when roots fill the container and need more space. If the mix drains more slowly, replace compacted mix; if the plant is unstable, stabilise the pot without increasing its size unless the roots are crowded.
• Propagation: Separate a basal shoot after it has rooted, or root a healthy stem section that carries an active node.

Solving common problems in Philodendron ‘Congo Green’

• The plant yellows or loses firmness in a wet pot: Pause watering and check drainage. If decline continues, inspect roots and retain all firm tissue. Cut only clearly rotten, soft root sections back to healthy tissue with disinfected scissors and discard the decayed pieces. Repot in fresh, airy substrate if the existing mix no longer drains. If the stem or crown is soft, retain only firm healthy growth; discard affected tissue if none remains.
• Dark wet spots or debris collect in the crown: Remove dead material, keep the centre dry and improve airflow. If the tissue is wet, soft or expanding, isolate the plant and remove severely affected tissue with clean tools. Seek an accurate diagnosis before disease-specific treatment.
• New leaves scar or sticky, cottony or webbed patches appear: Silvery scars and dark specks can indicate thrips; fine stippling and webbing mites; cottony clusters mealybugs; and sticky residue or raised shells aphids or scale. Inspect the folded growth and both leaf surfaces. Separate infested plants, clean off visible insects and use a houseplant treatment labelled for the confirmed pest, following the label for repeats. Misting alone does not control mites. For help recognising and treating the pest, see the thrips guide.
• A dry patch bleaches after strong sunlight: Sun or heat can scorch the exposed side of a leaf. Return the plant to filtered light and acclimate it gradually. If a patch turns wet or spreads, follow the precautions for crown and leaf lesions.
• Brown tips keep returning: Repeated drying, excess fertiliser salts or damaged roots may be involved. Rehydrate a hard-dried root ball thoroughly and let it drain, and flush salts after heavy feeding only if the substrate drains well. If tip damage comes with yellowing, poor growth or persistently wet roots, inspect the roots and keep all firm sections. Cut only confirmed rotten, soft tissue back to healthy growth with disinfected scissors and discard the decay before repotting. Further causes and solutions are covered in the brown leaf tips guide.

Philodendron ‘Congo Green’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: where the name comes from

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
