Philodendron ‘Caramel’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Caramel’

Philodendron ‘Caramel’ is a cultivar with an undocumented early history.

The names ‘Caramel Pluto’ and ‘Caramel Marble’ are also used for cultivars in horticulture. Their exact relationship to ‘Caramel’ is still uncertain.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Caramel’

• Crown care: Rotate the pot periodically for even growth and leave enough horizontal space for the crown to widen.
• Light: Provide bright filtered light. Acclimate the plant slowly before exposing it to any direct sun.
• Water: Let part of the mix dry, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain.
• Potting mix: Use an airy blend of bark, fibrous material and mineral components that drains freely while holding some moisture.
• Temperature and humidity: Temperatures around 18–29 °C suit routine growth; relocate it if conditions stay below 15 °C. Keep the air at about 50–60% relative humidity. Allow gentle circulation around new growth.
• Feeding: Apply a moderate dose of suitable fertiliser during active growth.
• Repotting: Give it a slightly larger pot when the root system is crowded. Replace tired mix separately, and keep the plant stable in a container that fits the roots.
• Propagation: Use a rooted basal shoot or a healthy stem cutting with at least one node.

Troubleshooting Philodendron ‘Caramel’

• A warm-toned new leaf gradually becomes green: This is normal as the whole leaf hardens. Compare several healthy leaves before changing care.
• Lower leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: Pause watering and check drainage. If yellowing or wilting continues, inspect the roots. Leave every firm root intact, even if dark. Cut only clearly rotten, soft tissue back to healthy growth with disinfected scissors and discard the decay. Repot in fresh, airy mix if the substrate has broken down. If the crown or short stem becomes soft, retain only firm healthy material. Discard the plant if none remains.
• New leaves develop silver scars, speckles or webbing: Silvery damage with dark specks or distorted folded growth can indicate thrips; fine stippling and webbing suggest spider mites. Cottony deposits and fixed bumps can indicate mealybugs or scale. Isolate infested plants, check folded growth and leaf undersides, remove visible pests and use a treatment labelled for the identified pest on houseplants. Follow label repeat intervals. For help recognising and treating the pest, see the thrips guide.
• Pale sun patches or recurring brown tips appear: An exposed dry bleached patch after stronger sun points to scorch; return the plant to filtered light and acclimate it slowly. Brown tips can also follow repeated hard drying, salt accumulation or damaged roots. Rewet dry mix fully, reduce excessive feeding and flush salts only when drainage is good. If browning accompanies wet roots or widespread yellowing, inspect the roots. Wet or enlarging patches need isolation, dry foliage and a diagnosis before targeted treatment. Further causes and solutions are covered in the brown leaf tips guide.

Philodendron ‘Caramel’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Philodendron get its name?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
