Oceaniopteris gibba

Botanical identity and natural origin of Oceaniopteris gibba

This fern is native to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, where it occurs in wet tropical vegetation.

You may also see this fern listed as Blechnum gibbum; both names refer to the same species.

Care routine for Oceaniopteris gibba

• Light: Give it bright filtered light or light shade. Strong direct sun can mark the soft green fronds.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures around 18–24 °C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Keep it warm and frost-free, preferably above 15 °C.
• Humidity: Provide about 60–80% humidity with gentle air circulation around the crown. Humid air helps new fronds open well.
• Water: Keep the mix evenly moist while allowing the surface to begin drying between waterings. Let all excess water drain from the pot.
• Growing mix: Use a rich, loose potting mix that drains well. A slightly acidic fern mix suits it.
• Feeding: Apply a mild balanced feed while new fronds are growing.
• Repotting: Move to a larger pot when roots fill the container and need more space. If the old mix compacts enough to slow drainage before then, replace the mix while keeping the pot appropriately sized.
• Grooming: Cut fully brown fronds away at the base with clean scissors, leaving the central crown undamaged.

Health issues in Oceaniopteris gibba

• Brown tips and crisp frond edges: The roots may be too dry, the air may be too dry, or both. Check the potting mix, water if needed, and raise local humidity.
• Pale or tan areas on the upper fronds: Strong direct light can scorch the foliage. Shift the plant into bright filtered light.
• Yellowing or collapsing fronds with wet mix: Roots that stay too wet can begin to rot. Let excess moisture drain, use a better-draining mix if needed, and remove any soft, rotted roots when repotting.
• The centre stops producing healthy new fronds: Cold, damage to the crown or ongoing problems with the roots can stop new fronds from developing. Keep the plant warm, check drainage and protect the centre of the crown from physical damage.

Keep Oceaniopteris gibba away from children and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear, and plant material can still cause an upset stomach.
• Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or do not settle.

Why do both Oceaniopteris gibba and Blechnum gibbum appear?

Oceaniopteris combines Oceania with Greek pteris, fern, reflecting a group centred in the Pacific. Gibba or gibbum means humped or swollen.

André Luís de Gasper and Alexandre Salino established the genus Oceaniopteris in 2016 in Phytotaxa, volume 275, page 214.

Jacques Julien Houtou de Labillardière first described it as Lomaria gibba in 1824 in Sertum Austro-Caledonicum, page 3. André Luís de Gasper and Alexandre Salino later placed it in Oceaniopteris as Oceaniopteris gibba in 2016 in Phytotaxa, volume 275, page 214.

Kew’s World Checklist treats Oceaniopteris gibba as a synonym of Blechnum gibbum. Georg Heinrich Mettenius placed the species in Blechnum as Blechnum gibbum in 1861 in Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Botanique, series 4, volume 15, page 68.
