Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata

Natural origin of Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata

This crested form comes from cultivation. Its species, Austrocylindropuntia subulata, is native to Peru and Bolivia, where it grows mainly in desert and dry-shrubland habitats.

How to care for Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata

Temperature: A range of 18–24 °C suits Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata. Avoid leaving it where temperatures stay below 5 °C.

After repotting, wait a few days before the first watering. During active growth, water thoroughly only once the mix has dried fully, allowing surplus water to drain away. When growth slows in cooler, lower-light conditions, give much less water. Feed during active growth with a specialist cactus fertiliser, at a moderate cactus dose.

Give full sun or strong direct light, increasing exposure gradually after a move. Normal indoor air is suitable, including relatively dry rooms. Keep the cactus well ventilated and protect it from frost.

Use a freely draining cactus mix containing mineral material. If the crest becomes top-heavy, choose a heavy, stable pot that can support it securely. Repot into a slightly larger container when a dense network of roots fills the pot.

Troubleshooting Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata

• Wilting or declining while the mix stays wet: Root rot is possible. Stop watering and empty any water beneath the pot. If the decline continues while the mix is still wet, lift the cactus carefully and inspect the roots. Leave firm roots intact; let the mix dry completely before the next thorough watering during active growth, and give much less water when growth is slow in cooler, lower-light conditions. If the roots are soft and brown, first check whether enough firm healthy roots remain and whether the cactus body is still largely firm. If both conditions are met, cut the rotten roots back to firm healthy tissue with a clean, disinfected tool and discard them. Keep the uprooted cactus dry and shaded until the cut root surfaces have dried thoroughly, then replant it in dry, freely draining cactus mix in a clean pot with drainage holes. Wait a few days before watering. After that pause, water thoroughly only during active growth and only when the mix is completely dry; give much less water when growth is slow in cooler, lower-light conditions. Extensive softening of the cactus body can be fatal.
• New cottony clusters in the folds or around spine bases: Mealybugs are possible, although the pale areoles and spine bases are normal parts of the cactus. Inspect closely and separate the plant if you suspect an infestation. Remove insects you can reach individually and keep checking hidden folds and joins. If insects persist, use a product labelled for mealybugs on this houseplant indoors. Test a small area before wider spraying, follow the label's application and repeat interval, and continue inspecting until the infestation is controlled.
• Fresh pale, bleached or dry scorched patches: A sudden increase in intense sunlight can damage the stems. Reduce the harsh exposure and then build up to stronger light gradually, aiming for strong light with some direct sun.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata has sharp parts

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Its effects on people are unclear.
• Fine glochids and larger spines can lodge in skin, paws, mouths or eyes and cause painful irritation.
• Handle it carefully. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after a serious injury, especially to the eye.

About the name Austrocylindropuntia subulata

Austrocylindropuntia combines southern with Cylindropuntia, the name of a group with cylindrical jointed stems. The epithet subulata means awl-shaped and refers to the plant’s narrow pointed leaf remnants.

Curt Backeberg established the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1938 in Blätter für Kakteenforschung, volume 5, issue 6, page 21.

Philipp August Friedrich Muehlenpfordt first described it as Pereskia subulata in 1845 in Allgemeine Gartenzeitung, volume 13, page 347. Curt Backeberg later placed it in Austrocylindropuntia as Austrocylindropuntia subulata in 1942 in Cactaceae (Berlin), volume 1941, issue 2, page 12.
