Englerarum montanum albo-variegata

Identity and natural origin of Englerarum montanum albo-variegata

This white- and cream-variegated form belongs to Englerarum montanum, a species native to south-western Yunnan, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. It grows among limestone rocks in humid forest, bamboo forest and open areas where vegetation is growing back.

Older labels may show Alocasia gageana. This is the same species now known as Englerarum montanum.

Care for Englerarum montanum albo-variegata

• Light: Give bright filtered light, with direct sun limited to gentle early or late hours.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures around 18–28 °C. Keep the plant above 15 °C while it is actively growing. As temperatures fall and growth slows, allow the mix to dry further between waterings.
• Water: During leafy active growth, maintain even moisture by watering as the upper mix starts to dry, then let the excess drain freely.
• Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity with gentle air movement around the leaves and crowded bases. High humidity helps fresh leaves open smoothly.
• Potting mix: Use a chunky, airy mix that holds some moisture and drains quickly, such as bark or coco chips with coir and pumice.
• Dormancy: The plant may enter a completely leafless rest. Once the foliage has died back and the underground stem remains firm, cut watering sharply and keep it warm until a new shoot appears.
• Feeding: Feed lightly every 2–4 weeks while the plant is actively growing leaves. Pause feeding while the plant is leafless.
• Repotting: Repot after the roots crowd the container or when the potting mix has broken down and lost its structure.
• Propagation: For propagation, pot up the small tuber-like growths at runner tips when they start to sprout; established side shoots with roots can also be separated at repotting.

Crisp cream margins, visible pests and softening stem bases

• Cream or white areas develop crisp brown edges: Hot sun, dry roots or fertiliser buildup can damage pale tissue. Move the plant away from intense midday light, restore steady moisture and flush the mix with plain water if you see a white crust on the surface.
• Many tiny pale spots, webbing or cottony insects appear: Spider mites or mealybugs may be present. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use a treatment labelled for it, repeating according to the product label and checking fresh growth closely.
• Leaves collapse and the underground stem becomes soft or smells sour: Rot has reached the base. Cut away all soft tissue to firm healthy growth with a clean tool and discard the rot, then replant the healthy section in fresh airy mix.

Englerarum montanum albo-variegata is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Why is it called Englerarum montanum?

Englerarum commemorates botanist Adolf Engler. Montanum means “of the mountains” or “mountain-growing”.

Lars Nauheimer and Peter Charles Boyce established the genus Englerarum in 2013 in Plant Systematics and Evolution, volume 300, page 713.

William Roxburgh first described it as Arum montanum in 1832 in Flora Indica, 1832 edition, volume 3, page 497. Peter Charles Boyce, Khant Zaw Hein, and Alistair Hay later placed it in Englerarum as Englerarum montanum in 2022 in Aroideana, volume 45, issue 3, page 145.
