Clumping houseplants that fill out from the base

Clumping plants build their shape through several crowns, offsets, rhizomes or shoots emerging around the base. Prayer plants, selected clumping palms, rhizomatous or stoloniferous ferns and many compact foliage genera gradually widen while keeping growth close to the pot. The number and spacing of stems determine how open or densely layered the clump appears. A broad container can support spreading rhizomes, while a stable standard pot suits upright clusters. Crowded roots, rapid drying and a distorted container are useful repotting signs.

Reserve space according to the species’ expected width and how quickly it offsets or extends its rhizomes. The watering guide helps account for dense root systems and the slower drying of broad clumps. Established growth can later be used for houseplant propagation where the species allows it.
